Welcome to our web site! We hope you enjoy your visit.
There's a great deal on the site about our life and work. It will give you a good sense of our community, our sisters and our mission.
We are Dominicans, part of the global "'Order of Preachers".
Dominicans live and pray in a holy tradition that dates back to the time of Saint
Dominic - the 13th Century.
Our mission, as Dominicans, is to preach God's love. This mission requires
a vowed life, liturgical prayer and lifelong study.
The Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne preach, not from a pulpit, but through our
apostolate of nursing and bringing consolation to incurable cancer patients who cannot pay for the care they need. We have been doing this for 105 years.
This, our 106th year, is a very exciting time for us.
We are opening a new home - this one in Kisumu, Kenya. Though they live
in poverty, the people of Kisumu are rich in spirit. But one of the great tragedies of their lives is the loss of many of their children to Burkitt's Lymphoma - an aggressive cancer about which little is known. Too often these children die alone, without consolation, even without pain killers. We are going to Kisumu to care for them. We will be working with the Eastern Africa Dominican Friars (www.eafricadominicans.org)
That is our apostolate - to go to the poor who are afflicted with cancer, to live among them, and to nurse and comfort them. It is a wonderful means of bearing witness to Christ's teachings, and keeping His teachings an active force for good in a world scarred by loss of faith. We must show that all life is sacred, especially now as our society is turning to euthanasia. We show by example that there is a better way.
Currently we have five homes in the United States. The home in Kisumu will
be our first home outside the country. Going to Kisumu is a big step for us, a real challenge, but we believe it is what God is asking us to do.
Our greatest challenge today, even greater than opening a home in a distant land, is to develop new vocations. So much needs to be done, but how much we can do depends on increasing our numbers.
If you're exploring a religious vocation, and would like to visit with us,
please contact Sr. Alma Marie, our Vocation Director. She will provide you
with whatever information you need, and she will do all that she can to assist you in your discernment of a religious vocation.
Thank you for visiting with us, and God bless you.
