Kisumu

Why Kisumu, Kenya?

Setting off to Kisumu to find the answer to our question:
Is this something God has in mind for us?

The life expectancy of Kenyans in Nyanza Province, where Kisumu is located, has dropped to below 38 years.
UN Report, 2004
Our hands are full these days with orphans, the sick, and burials.”
Father Martin Martiny, OP
My hope is that as sisters in Dominic and Francis, we might begin a collaboration to establish your charism here, in Kisumu.”
Sr. Irene Akumba, FSA
“The Burkitt's Cancer of children who have reached the terminal stage are especially in need of the kindness and care, characteristic of your Charism.”
Most Reverend Zacchaeus Okoth
Archbishop of Kisumu

In many ways our visit was a step back in time, and we saw the plight of the poor as if looking through the eyes of Rose Hawthorne.

In Kisumu the poor are everywhere. But still they are so very generous. Wherever we went they offered to share what little food they had and we knew, sometimes, that what they were offering us was all they had.

The Kisumu hospital has a wing paid for by Walter Reed Hospital (U.S.). Although intended for TB patients, it was given over to the children with Burkitt's because their need is so great.

There were 20 or so children there the day we visited. Some had been brought to the hospital by their families. Others, because of superstition, were abandoned on the streets. Many had big lesions on their faces. They were happy for any attention.

We attended Mass with the people of Kisumu. Their Masses are extraordinary. Their singing is so beautiful and natural… and like their dancing, so much a part of their culture. After Mass everyone greets you. They are so happy to have you.
